Lufthansa and Air China extend cooperation
Strong together in Chinese market: Lufthansa and Air China.
With Air China and Shanghai Airlines, Lufthansa has two potent partners in a country with a surging economy. “China is an extremely important market with a great future,“ said Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber at the signing of the accord extending the codeshare agreement between Lufthansa and Air China in Peking in May 2006. The agreement, first concluded in 2000, has been prolonged for a further five-year term. Its extension allows customers of both carriers to continue profiting from an extensive route work and greater flexibility in their travel planning.
Sponsor for Air China
A measure of the value their partnership is to both airlines was brought home by special show of confidence: At the close of talks with Air China on its admission to the Star Alliance, Air China officials expressly requested that Lufthansa act as mentor to the Chinese carrier on its road to membership of the world’s biggest airline grouping. Lufthansa has subsequently been providing support to its airline partner since the signing of the memorandum of understanding in May 2006 on Air China’s accession to the Star Alliance.
