Ameco
Success story par excellence in China: Ameco
Ameco in Peking is one of the major MRO bases in the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services network operated by Lufthansa Technik AG. The company is a joint venture in which state-owned Air China holds a 60 per-cent stake and Lufthansa 40 per cent.
Ameco Beijing on the perimeter of Beijing International Airport employs a workforce of more than 3,900 Chinese skilled workers. Aside from Air China, its clientele includes more than 30 other Chinese carriers as well as close to 40 international airlines. Since the company’s founding in 1989, the two partners in this most important Sino-German joint venture in the aviation industry have invested almost 200 million dollars and transformed Ameco into China’s biggest maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) operation.

The services portfolio provided by Ameco Beijing ranges from maintenance (line Maintenance) and overhaul (heavy maintenance) of aircraft from the Boeing and Airbus planemakers to repair and servicing of aero-engines and components. Spraying all types of commercial aircraft is another successful product in the portfolio. Ameco Beijing is one of the few MRO providers in Chinas to be certificated by the Chinese (CAAC), US (FAA) and European (EASA) aviation authorities as well as 16 other airworthiness authorities. In 2004, Lufthansa and Air China agreed to cement their cooperation for a further 25 years. The accord is mutually beneficial: It gives Air China access to maximum service reliability and Lufthansa Technik interesting opportunities in the Asia growth market.
Around 300 million dollars have been set aside in an investment programme. It will fund the construction of further maintenance hangars, parts stores, components workshops and the provision of further aircraft and power plant maintenance services. When a third runway and third terminal come into operation in 2007 in preparation for the Peking Olympics, Ameco will open a completely new MRO hangar.
